Following the horrific terrorist slaughter of nine African Americans in their place of worship in Charleston USA, it has become clear that this was an attack motivated by a deeply racist ideology. President Barack Obama has made a statement, primarily calling on Americans to face up to its record on gun violence. What this attack reminds us is that the evil of racism is still as real and deadly as at any time in the last century. It reminds us that regardless of how big or small our organisation we must carry out our commitment to challenging racist ideologies particularly within policing and the criminal justice system where sadly there is a long and dreadful history of racial injustice. Our tribute to the bereaved families of Charleston is that we remain firmly committed to the struggle for freedom justice and equality of all.
